After a Gin fuelled New Year’s Eve, an idea sprung and turned into a dream. It started with three friends and a Cotton Mill in North Yorkshire. Together they create a perfect mix of passion and creativity to bring something unique to each of their spirits. This balance is demonstrated in their products bringing you the finest quality botanicals, harmoniously blended.
After hearing the distiller and owner, Chris and Andy, speak at a recent online event, I was intrigued to know more about Cotton Gin from Otterbeck Distillery. I’d seen the gorgeous bottles all over social media and was left wondering why such a gorgeous bottle hadn’t already made it into my collection! * * After a few hiccups with the website (for some reason, it dislikes my mobile devices hence a loss of a point with customer service) I finally managed for £38 to order myself a bottle. Delivery was fairly swift and, within 3 working days, I had myself a bottle! * * The bottle design is stunning with wisps of cotton printed around the bottle in white and bronze paying homage to the history of the distillery buildings. The distillery is housed in an 18th century building on the banks of the River Aire, formally a cotton mill producing yarn and silk. The 450 litre copper still is named Eliza after the mill owner’s wife, ensuring the history of the building is kept alive. * * So to the gin… on the nose, this is a gloriously herbaceous gin with clear aromas of pine and mint. Neat, the pine notes are at the forefront and the mint is definitely clear in taste. This is a savoury gin tasted neat, hardly surprising with watercress, English coriander and nettle leaves listed amongst the botanicals (foraged from the surrounding countryside). The addition of ice reveals a subtle sweetness and the herbs really come to the forefront. This is a definite easy-drinker, and could quite easily be enjoyed very simply with ice. With the addition of a light tonic, this chameleon gin moves in flavour again, with the citrus elements coming forward and finishing with an almost vanilla sweetness. There is a real feeling of being in the countryside in springtime! * * Would I recommend this gin? Absolutely! Will I be buying again? Most definitely! I just need the website to work for me!
I mean look at this beautiful gin, this bottle definitely deserves a place on any shelf. Such art and design on a beautiful classic bottle. This beautiful bottle was created by one of the c0-founders herself. Located in the Yorkshire Dales you will find Otterbeck Distillery. This herbaceous distilled London Dry Gin gives a fresh smell of those famous pine notes us gin lovers all know so well.
This gin has an all-round smooth and (very unique) fresh taste courtesy of the watercress and is backed up with a spice of coriander. This earthy toned gin is rounded off perfectly with an aromatic and warming taste of citrus.
This gin is paired beautifully with a garnish of rosemary and lemon peel to really compliment the gin. And just a light tonic.
